American Youth Hostel-style bike trips offer teens a safe, life-changing way to explore the world. Let your teen discover the thrill of the open road while forming lasting bonds with others.
Long before modern summer camps, the international hosteling movement introduced a different way for young people to travel, one built on independence, curiosity, and exploration.
American Youth Hostel–style bike trips follow that tradition.
Instead of highly structured camp programs, teens experience self-supported adventure, traveling by bicycle, working together as a group, and discovering new places along the way.
It’s a style of travel that has inspired generations of young explorers, and it continues to give teens a meaningful way to experience the world today.
Teen Treks is one of the few organizations in the USA still operating with the original AYH-style bike touring approach. Based in Buffalo, New York, Teen Treks offers self-supported bike tours across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The self-supported style means that teenagers on a Teen Treks bike trip carry their own gear, learn to fix their bikes, cook meals for the group, and camp at campgrounds or stay in hostels along the way.
The self-supported nature of Teen Treks bike trips grew out of the original AYH-style tradition of biking from hostel to hostel, where students carried their own sleeping gear, bike tools, and personal items. This independent method helps teens develop new skills and take on leadership roles within a collaborative group setting.
Spending the summer outdoors, traveling by bicycle, and seeing the world up close becomes its own form of a “wandering school,” creating many opportunities for teens to grow individually and broaden their perspectives of the world.
Teens will make new friends and learn camping, backpacking, and budgeting skills, all while under the supervision of experienced bikepackers. Our camp leaders receive extensive training in bicycle repair and first aid, ensuring your child is safe at all times. Our groups feature ten teens to two camp leaders.
Teens on an AYH-style bike trip join teenagers from all across the country on an immersive multi-week journey where they work together as a team to accomplish daily goals and complete miles.
Each day, they take on an individual role within the group setting, such as lead navigator, bike-safety manager, or group-morale guide. These roles help teens develop leadership skills among their peers.
They also rotate daily through a grocery-shopping and cooking team or a tent-setup and cleanup team, offering opportunities to learn new skills and exercise their independence under the supervision of leaders who act as mentors.
AYH-style bike trips help teens become confident and empowered as they return to school and extracurricular activities and prepare for life beyond high school.

Every day on an AYH-style bike trip is hands-on and meaningful. Teens wake up, pack their gear, map their route, and work together to reach the next destination—whether it’s a campground, hostel, or small town along the way. Along the journey, they cook meals, solve challenges, support one another, and take ownership of their experience. It’s not just about the miles traveled—it’s about learning responsibility, building confidence, and creating unforgettable moments through real, shared adventure.
