Teen Bike Tours Inspired by the AYH Spirit of Adventure

Turn off the phones and hit the open road. Teen Treks offers unplugged teen bike tours that help riders build independence, form real friendships, and experience the world under their own power.

Our trips draw inspiration from the historic American Youth Hostels bike-travel tradition, while remaining independently operated by Teen Treks.

Is Cycling Good for Teenagers?

Cycling gives teens something they do not always get in everyday life: movement, freedom, responsibility, and time outdoors.

On a Teen Treks bike tour, riders build strength, learn to trust themselves, and experience the confidence that comes from meeting real challenges on the road.

Builds Confidence

A day on the road asks teens to step up. One rider might help lead the group to a farmer’s market, find a lunch stop, or help adjust the route when weather changes.

Those small decisions matter. They help teens discover that they are capable, resourceful, and stronger than they thought.

Fosters Health

Cycling replaces screen time with fresh air, movement, and time outside.

Whether the day starts cloudy, turns sunny, or ends with a stop for ice cream after a long ride, teens experience the simple reward of using their bodies, clearing their minds, and moving through the world at bike speed.

Sparks Growth

At camp or over dinner, riders talk through the day, share highs and lows, and plan for what comes next.

They take on roles, support one another, and learn how to adapt. Growth happens naturally because the experience asks something real from them.

Are Bike Tours Worth It?

A teen bike tour is more than a trip. It is a shared journey that builds confidence, practical skills, and friendships through real experience.

Teen Treks carries forward the spirit of classic AYH bike travel through independently operated tours across the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Creates Bonds

Many riders remember their Teen Treks trip as one of the best parts of their summer. Friendships form quickly when teens ride together, cook together, solve problems together, and spend time without phones competing for their attention.

Teaches Skills

Teen Treks bike tours help riders practice real-life skills: cooking, budgeting, bike care, packing, laundry, navigation, and group decision-making. These are simple skills, but they build independence in a way teens can feel.

Immerses Teens in New Places

Bike travel lets teens experience places slowly and directly. They pass through towns, visit local stops, meet people along the way, and notice details they would miss from a car window or airport gate.

What Makes Teen Bike Tours Unique?

Teen bike tours are different because they are active, unplugged, and shaped by the group.

Teen Treks blends camping, hostels, cycling, and small-group travel into a supervised adventure that helps teens grow through responsibility and shared experience.

No Screens Policy

For more than 15 years, Teen Treks has encouraged riders to step away from screens and be present on the road (unless taking photos, that is!). Without phones in the center of every moment, teens have more room for conversation, games, reflection, and real connection.

Self-Led Exploration

Teens take part in the journey. They help choose stops, manage daily responsibilities, support the group, and learn what it means to travel together. Teen Treks keeps groups small, with up to ten riders and two leaders, so every teen has room to participate, contribute, and grow.

Teen Treks and the Legacy of AYH Bike Travel

The American Youth Hostels tradition helped introduce generations of young people to simple, affordable, human-powered travel.

Teen Treks founder Cliff Madell first experienced that kind of travel through AYH bike trips and later led AYH trips during his college summers. When those teen bike trips were no longer being offered, Teen Treks was created to keep independent teen bike travel alive in its own way.

Today, Teen Treks continues that spirit through independently operated teen bike tours built around camping, hostels, cycling, friendship, and discovery.

Ditch the Screens, Grab Your Bike, and Own the Adventure

Give your teen a summer filled with fresh air, real friendships, new skills, and stories they will remember long after the ride ends.
